So I’ve spent five days with great people having awesome experiences and quite a few Beer Lao  Here are my Southern Laos highlights for this trip!

Wat Phu

Wat Phu is a Khmer Era Temple located in the Champassak Province of Southern Laos. Trees with beautiful Champa flowers lead the way up into the hill where you can find the “Sanctuary” room filled with Buddhas statues and people praying.

Loads of waterfalls were on the menu for this trip. Tad Fan was probably my favorite of the bunch with it’s 120 meters height and the zip-lining we did over it. Awesome!

Coming close was the Khon Pha Peng waterfall which is a wide and violent waterfall. We could walk quite close to it, experiencing how powerful it is!

Another Southern Laos highlight was the food! Many of the meals we had were authentic Lao food. With the proximity of the Mekong, a lot of fish meals were served. A thumbs up for the fried “pla nang” fish. Also, the local baguette sandwich called “Khao Jee” should not be missed when in Laos!

Local Experiences

We did a quick stop at a blacksmith workshop to witness the knife making. These people work hard!

We stopped also at a roadside shop selling palm sugar. I had no clue that the sap was collected from the tap of the tree. We could also enjoy the fruits from these same palm trees used to make sugar.

Don Det Island

This island located in the famous “4000 Islands” is a heaven on the Mekong. Accommodations of all prices can be found while the the island keep it’s authenticity. The sunsets and sunrise are awesome. A 2 minutes walk and you are walking among the rice fields and water buffaloes.

This trip was done by bus with a group of other bloggers and a very helpful guide (Mr.Ting!) ready to explain everything. If you prefer more freedom, you can rent a motorbike and visit all by yourself or use local transportation.

Southern Laos definitely has to be on any Southeast Asia itinerary!
